FIRES! For New Years

The New Year's Eve was last night!! I went to the Christmas Tree Bonfire on Orleans Ave. As usual it was chaos incarnate and great time was had by all. We had to do a bit of work to keep the sanitation department from dragging away our tree, but we staked our claim and defended our fire. I'd like to spend a special shout-out to the newly formed MCBC (Mid-City Bonfire Commission) for all of their hard work and effort in getting things together this year. I feel it was a great success.

In addition to the Bonfire, I had the pleasure of seeing an amazing house fire while hanging out at a friend's house the other night. I kind of feel bad saying that it was a pleasure to watch these poor people's house burn, but I can't help but love watching firefighters doing their job. As the pictures will reveal, the flames weren't really shooting out of the house so much as they creating huge amounts of heat and pressure inside the house itself. Watching the firemen ripping apart the roof to let the gas and heat escape while others blasted the interior with water was fascinating. I was able to really watch the strategy the guys used to battle the blaze and the technique that they employed to keep things manageable and safe for their own people. I have to say, it truly inspiring to watch the intensity and selflessness with which the firefighters worked. We as a people are blessed to have people that are willing to risk that much and truly give of themselves for the good of others.
